Founded in 1849, H. W. Sutliff created the Sutliff Tobacco Company. His location, San Francisco, California, was a perfect location for a tobacco company at the time, considering this was a prime location of the California Gold Rush. Sutliff stayed as a retail store for the rest of the 1800s and through the early 1900s, where they would sell cigars and pipe tobacco to new Californians and the descendants of the 49ers that originally came in search of gold and fortune.

In 1933, Sutliff created their signature blend, Mixture Number 79, which is a mixture that still holds some popularity to this day. However, the initial demands for Mixture Number 79 in the 1930s and 1940s forced Sutliff to search for a location that would provide them more space to produce enough of the tobacco to satisfy their growing customer base. Because of that, the company moved from its original home of San Francisco to Richmond, Virginia, in 1953. Richmond was the place to be as a tobacco company at the time, and many companies still call the city home today. With all of their products made in the United States, you will find that Sutliff has been an All-American institution for almost 200 years, and they are still going strong.
