For more than 145 years, Romeo y Julieta Cigars have excited the passions of cigar lovers with their dynamic blends and notoriously immaculate constructions.
The lore behind the name Romeo y Julieta goes back to the mid-19th century, in the early days of lectors in Havana cigar factories. A tradition often credited to Don Jaime Partagás’s factory, La Flor de Tabacas, orators would be hired to read to the Torcedores (skilled factory cigar rollers) as a means of entertainment and to help morale through the long monotonous shifts. Legend has it, the classic Shakespeare tragedy was popular among the workers, and thus inspired the name.
No matter the true origins of the name, it is one that quickly gained prestige around the cigar world, as Romeo y Julieta won a myriad of awards in tasting exhibitions in the late 19th century, the evidence of which is still proudly displayed in the cluster of gold medals lining the brand’s logo.
Though the brand was a great success into the 20th century (and I’m sure you can guess where this is going) yes, the nationalization of the tobacco industry in the Cuban Revolution resulted in two Romeo y Julieta brands—one remaining in Havana under the Cubatabaco monopoly and the other re-established in La Romana in the Dominican Republic.
Despite this setback, the Dominican branch went on and continues to offer the American cigar market a vast selection of incredible cigars. Notes of subtly sweet creaminess and smoky earthiness harmonize perfectly in a smooth draw—offering a vivid and nuanced smoking experience.
