When you smoke a Virginia/Perique blend, you expect two things: savory delicious flavor and a sharp swampy smell (which is thanks to the Perique). While this blend actually tastes better than most, the room note is actually not too bad. Many would actually call it pleasant! But if you are familiar with Rattray's, this shouldn't surprise you, you know that their tobacco blends are always top notch.

Rattray's Marlin Flake
Different for sure and hard to keep lit but smoke ok when left standing for later smoke...not certain as a long term use.

Good Stuff
Marlin Flake more sweet then spicy. Flakes are easy to rub out. If you like va/per give this a try

Complex deliciousness.
I'll start by saying this, the old timers suggest new smokers begin with a milder tobacco. They are correct. This is my first smoke in many years. It's strong stuff so I switched to a filtered pipe. There are so many delicious elements here. It's spicy at times and very rounded during others and then, wow, it all comes together. Keep tamping as you smoke to keep the burning consistent and you won't be disappointed!

strong earthy smoke
Whether you fold and stuff; or rub it out, you'll probably need to let the flake dry a bit to minimize relights. Strong full flavor with an earthy overtones. Almost get a caramel like flavor as the bowl goes down.
