In 1826, there was a small tobacco manufacturer in the town of Svendborg, Denmark. This coastal city, sitting at the opening to the Baltic Sea, was an ideal location for opening up a business for trade, especially tobacco. It was owned and operated by Svend Bønnelykke, who passed away in 1876. One year later, Harald Halberd purchased the business, modernizing the factory and renaming it the "Harald Halberg Cigar and Tobacco Factories."

The Mac Baren Tobacco Company traces its lineage back to Mr. Halberg, along with special mention of Mr. Bønnelykke as well. A family business, Mac Baren has stayed as a Halberg run company, passing from Harald to his sons Otto and Einar, then Jørgen, to present-day company head, Henrik Halberg.

Harald, Otto, and Einar all proved reliable and successful stewards of their tobacco business, but it was Jørgen's contributions that helped place the company on the map. A creative and adventurous tobacconist, Jørgen Halberg decided to try something new, and he succeeded beyond what anyone might have expected.

Jørgen was the one to create the Mac Baren blends that the company became known for, something that they later honored by changing their name to the Mac Baren Tobacco Company in 1995. Incredibly popular, the Mac Baren tobacco blends still remain a commonly selected tobacco throughout the pipe smoking world.
