LARGO "Regular"
I am live-writing this review. It is 2:39am on July 3, 2024. I have smoked this "LARGO Regular" tobacco before, many bowls, and to be up front I've not been impressed... I'm of the opinion that this is medium cigarette tobacco meant for hand rolling quick smokes ~ and absolutely not for enjoying in a long pipe smoke. Tin Note: Reminds me of Basic Cigarettes, a brand owned by Philip Morris International; a discount brand. I know that won't satisfy many so I'll try again: Okay, a deeper dive into the Tin Note, committing a few deep, long, contemplative, fresh breaths... leafy, raisin, and I'm reaching - a caramel or butterscotch aroma. Despite my overall disappointment, this smells fine; I've always thought this smells fine. It's just that I boldly assert... it is not pipe tobacco. Cut & Color, Moisture: This is either Shag or Ribbon cut, maybe both... four colors of tobacco can be seen. Very, very dry. When I used to roll my own cigarettes ~ this I did not know of but would've been ideal in all ways. Texture: Honestly... there's a lot to like about its texture. If you roll your own and you like Marlboro or Lucky Strike ~ I think you'd like this; keep a pouch around - take it camping... I really think you'd like this if you roll your own cigarettes. Back to the world of Pipe Tobaccos though. Packing: Easy... really easy. I sprinkle a little into the bottom of my bowl, I shove a bit more in, I pinch a bit in and twist, I snag a little more and press down - and rotate the whole bowl under my thumb which packs the lot in and give it a nice spiral pack from bottom to top of the bowl. No issues, ideal packing. This may not be ideal pipe tobacco but it facilitates good packing or rolling. Lighting: Done... as soon as this tastes flame - it's roaring. Taste: Nothing. The taste is like if someone was smoking a RYO cigarette in another room and you barely get a whiff of it. It tastes of... nothing. Sure, there is something burning... but what??? No clue. Heat: Burns fast due to the cut... I think I could pack this bowl monumentally full and it'll still breathe; so if you want a slow smoke... this is not it. Maybe if you hydrate the ever living heck out of it it'll last. Ash: Burns to soft nothingness with ease. Aftertaste: None... this seems to be chemical free too. It's like the only think that I'm smoking is time, lol. I get like... a little... "Autumn" leafy, last mow of the year, afterthought when I lick my lips. lol, I don't know how to explain it. Thoughts: My only problem with this is that it does not seem like pipe tobacco at all. Otherwise ~ good friggin' job, LARGO. No nicotine rush. Possibly best for breaking in a new pipe with then moving on to real pipe tobacco. 3:11am now... I relit it 3x because I paused to write as I went ~ bowl is done. Don't expect much from this. If I had to dream up a scenario where I'd be glad to have this - it'd be like... I'm camping, it's raining, I'm fishing under cover... and a fellow fisherman has this and two new corncob pipes with him. I kick a small fire into life and make us some coffee or tea as we break in these new corncob pipes and talk about our favorite catches and embellish about got aways. Final Thoughts: 3:17am... not much to say. No lingering aroma, taste on lips, nothing... this is easily forgot. Maybe if I was inhaling its nicotine rush would mean something to me... but... I just can't help but think it's a waste of time. If I ever buy another pack... it's to toss in my camping gear and forget about for in case I run out of real pipe tobacco while away.
