Patel was a lawyer in Los Angeles, California, during the early 1990s. A friend introduced him to cigars, and he was hooked. He immersed himself in the Los Angeles cigar community, helping found a smoking club and investing in a cigar company. In 1996, he showcased the initial batch of cigars from the Indian Tabac Cigar Co.
Twenty-five years later, and Rocky Patel has become one of the hardest working men in the cigar world. His constant travel helps him keep in contact with all stages of cigar production, from manufacturing to sales.
Patel's partner in this collaboration is Jonathan Drew from Drew Estate. Since 1998, he and partner Marvin Samel have been making and selling cigars in New York City. Their passion for the business, along with their innovation, gave them the title of "The Rebirth of Cigars."
Drew Estate started small, very small. Their first store was a 16 square foot kiosk in the World Trade Center, in downtown Manhattan. Persevering through some rough times, Drew would move to Esteli, Nicaragua, where he opened up a small cigar factory. Meanwhile, Samel stayed in New York, hustling and selling the cigars Drew would create and ship up from the factory. The cigars turned out to be better than anyone could have expected, and their business has thrived as a model of what the new blood of the cigar world can do.
