Cornell and Diehl's Bayou Morning Flake is a strong Virginia and Perique blend.  While most Virginia and Perique blends are sweet, tangy, and light this blend is a dark and rich departure from the type.  The dark chunks are made of twenty five percent Perique and a mixture of Virginias.  The blend is strong and full flavored, yet displays a surprising delicacy.  Far more than an entry level Va/Per, this blend is an experienced piper's blend.

What is in it?
Opening the tin reveals a very soft flake that breaks apart into a ribbon easily.  The smell is on the dark and rich end of the Virginia spectrum.  You would never confuse the Virginia here for Orlik Golden Sliced or Dunhill Flake.  The broken, loose and thick flakes contain:

Virginia: This blend is supposed to contain Red Virginia.  I would not have guessed this from the flavor.  The Virginias have been stoved, aged or pressed into a richer component.  There is a woody flavor that reminds me of the aroma of a moist decomposing log.  There is no bright, sweet, light Virginia here, but the blend is rich, full, and pungent.

Perique:  A full quarter of this blend is Perique tobacco.  That is a generous application of the potent leaf.  Perique is usually fruity and spicy, but the spice is diminished here.  It is remarkable that this much Perique does not run away with the blend.

How does it smoke?
This blend is a much stronger representation of it's genre than many Va/Pers.  I do not remember having a more full flavored Va/Per.  This is to Va/Pers what Dunhill Nightcap is to English Blends.  While researching this blend, I assumed that the high Perique content was to push the envelope for smokers who love perique.  Having smoked the blend I believe that 25% perique was simply the amount needed to balance the strong and dark Virginias.   The first light tastes of a rich fruit like prunes or figs.  This is the Perique jumping out front, but it is quickly restrained by the Virginia.  The interplay continues down the bowl and after the first third I notice none of the slight harshness that can accompany some C&D blends.  The dark fruitiness and mouldering wood gives a flavor reminiscent of a dark cider.  The blend is a relaxing and contemplative smoke.  The smoothness midbowl hides a good dose of nicotine that may catch some pipers off guard.

How to prepare it?
The flakes in my tin were partially broken up, but one could see how dense and thick they were at packing.  A rub out was not necessary, and rolling the flake into a ball seems to give good results.  I was surprised that drying time seemed to lessen the flavor in this blend.  Far too loose for a cube cut, the flake does not seem to be dense enough to bother maintaining during loading.  It is best to treat this blend like a thick ribbon.  A lighter than usual pack seems to help keep the relights at bay, and small puffs will help keep the flavor strong and the nicotine in check.

    Fantastic, easy smoke

What I received isn't what I would call a flake. It was very broken up. However not a deal breaker, especially after smoking it. The date on the tin says it was packed about 6 months ago. What an absolutely incredible smoke! Burns well, minimal relights, and smokes very cool. The taste is incredible! I'm not going to throw words like bready or grassy out there, I'm just going to say the flavor is strong and very good. Leaves you very satisfied.

First time trying this, I found it to be a pleasant experience to smoke, it ended up being an all-day smoke. I would like to try it again soon.

Absolutely love BMF from C and D. Seems a bit stronger than the ribbon cut. If you are a perique fan you’ve got to try this!

    Bayou Morning Flake

Great Va/Per. Darker, richer, fuller than the ribbon cut, flakes break up effortlessly - facilitating a faster dry time and smoking experience. For the price point and availability this is a great Virginia/Perique blend that needs to be tried at least once.

    good blend

The flake is very nice, good right from the tin. I do let it sit a while in a bowl to get the most from the flavor. Burns well, once fully lit. Great flavor! For the advanced Enthusiast and the Adventurous Rookie. power level medium/high but the flavor is worth it!

A must in the morning (or anytime of the day)

A slow, cool, delicious, down to ashes tobacco. I really enjoy it with a cup of coffee. Very forgiving and does not require many relights, smokes well in any pipe you use. Since I first bought it has been a regular and I always have an extra tin to avoid running out.

Take me to the Bayou, boys

This one leaped to the top of my VaPer list, which is small. I tend to like English type blends mostly, but in the mornings I enjoy a Virginia type in a corn cob. This is a superb smoke. It smells heavenly and smokes cool and smooth. It's a bit damp, so you can air it out for a few if you wish.

    First Parique Virginia Blend

Posted by Capt Alex on 29th Mar 2019

Well, this was my first Parique Virginia blend and I think it was a really good one to start with! The tin note is unbelievable! It smelled of figs, earth and perhaps a little bit of morning dew. The flake is broken up and I did not rub it out, just packed my pipe and began to puff away. It smoked cool and has an aroma that reminds me of a cool morning in the deer woods. A dozen or so bowls later and it continues to only get better! The moisture was absolutely perfect right out of the tin! This will definitely be one I always keep on hand! I’m looking forward to cellaring a few tins, I can only imagine how good they’ll be!
