Vitale Piero, the Italian craftsman behind the stylish designs of Bluebird Pipes, is bringing a fresh perspective to the art of carving pipes.
Prior to taking up the craft, Piero had a history of woodworking, a skill his grandfather imparted. So, when a friend introduced him to the world of pipe smoking in 2014, it wasn’t long before he was carving pipes of his own. He quickly found a deep appreciation for the craft. “I’ve discovered that by using my creativity and skill to carve harmonious shapes that highlight the beauty of the briar, a pipe can become something very close to a piece of art,” explains Piero.
This quickly popularizing brand is bringing creativity and modern design to tradition—reimagining “classic shapes through a modernist lens.” It’s almost as though Bluebird designs were inspired by shining a light behind those classic familiar shapes, projecting their shadows to the wall and ever so slightly distorting the silhouettes. Reimaginings that don’t take garish liberties, but rather elegant departures. Through this modernist lens, these pipes show appreciation for the traditional without shying from boldness.
Additionally, these designs are as thoughtful in their creativity as they are in their attention to comfort and pragmatism. Characterized by stylish, long flared shanks and light as a feather plucked right from a blue jay, these pipes facilitate the ease with which pipe smoking is meant to be enjoyed.
