Pipe cleaners
They clean pipe stems.

Functional. Efficient.
Most pipe cleaners are too soft and better for making twisty toys for children than cleaning a pipe on the go. These are absorbent enough, almost rigid enough (but would be less lightweight if they were stronger), and have the perfect balance of rigid and soft in the bristles to clear out all but the really stubborn tar, ash, and wet tobacco bits. The machine they use to cut these is dull on one side, so one end each each pipe cleaner is slightly bent and the metal is sharp; if they fix that, these will be great for any use except twisty toys for twisted tots.

B.J. Long's pipe cleaners
It almost seems that there are as many brands and varieties of toothpaste as there are pipe cleaners. This brings to mind a comment I overheard in the dentist office between the doctor and patient. He (the dentist) said," I don't care which brand you use, just use it. I think the same should apply to the pipe cleaner. I've used this simple tool for a number of years, and during this time have found the most reliable brand to be the B.J. Long. It is strong enough to resist troublesome bending most of the time but has enough give to worm its way into difficult places. I've used mostly regulars, but have also used the bristle and extra absorbents as needed for heavy cleaning. Granted, there are times when a shank brush has to be used. Because I go through about three cleaners per smoke, I do have to buy quite a few packs at a time. But considering that that I'm getting a product that meets my needs, the price is right. Admittedly, every so often I get a dud, but considering the usage, this rarely happens. Given that these are reliable, easy to use cleaners, available at a reasonable price, I can only recommend them. I should add that the price is a small one to pay for the health of your pipe. And I should also remind my fellow pipers that whatever brand they choose is worthless unless used and used often.

Gets stems clean
I used to use those fluffy soft pipe cleaners, but they bent too easily and were not hard enough to pick up the grit and moisture from the stem. That leads to a sour-tasting pipe, although a little whisky will fix that (in the pipe, not the smoker, or maybe a little of both; you do you). These pipe cleaners are rigid and rough enough, without abrading your pipe, to cram through the stem and sweep out all of the ash and bits of tobacco as well as the moisture. I get more moisture out of a pipe with these than other brands, and it leads to better smoking satisfaction.

sufficient to be used as intended
Good for the task at hand but not as "fat" or "tapered" as some others I've used.

B.J. Long's Pipe Cleaners - 56 pack
These are slightly slimmer than those that come in the 100 pack. They work great in any pipe and because they are bound in the pack, I feel that they are smoother and don't shed lint. After trying many brands, these are my absolute favorite!
