If you are familiar with strong flavored European tobacco, then you are sure to know Rattray's. One of their more prominent blends is the Black Mallory english tobacco. This rustic tobacco is a complication concoction of Oriental, Latakia, Virginia, and Cavendish style tobacco. This blend has a moderate nicotine level, so it is best enjoyed after a fatty meal or after a long day at work.

    Black Mallory A Great English

Posted by Jeff R. on 29th Jul 2021

Black Mallory as Englishes go is one of the smoothest and well-balanced blends available. There's plenty of Latakia but it doe not overwhelm the other components.

    Rattray’s Black Mallory

I’ve been smoking Black Mallory since 1963. It is simply the best Scots-English tobacco. Always the same. It smokes evenly every time.

    So far...

Posted by Jim R. on 25th Mar 2021

I bought this because people who love it speak in rapturous terms about it, like it was the tobacco of the Gods or something. Well... I've smoked three bowls of it and it's a very fine tobacco. A very representative English blend. But nothing to really make it stand out. i can think of three or four English style tobaccos I like better. perhaps my palate isn't yet sophisticated enough to appreciate the subtleties, etc. If my view changes after smoking more, I will certainly change my review to reflect my new appreciation. There's something about the "tin note" that puts me off a bit. Like a tinned fruitcake that's been left in the sun for months and then opened.

    Another Quality English Blend

Very rich with leathery, smoky Latakia, and the Cavendish makes it even smoother. Nice bready sweetness from the Virginias. The orientals are subtle, just a hint of sourness. Very smooth foray into the more full-bodied English blends.

    Rattray's Black Mallory

Posted by Brian on 26th Dec 2020

I started smoking RBM when I was in college - over 40 years ago. Always one of my favorite pipe tobaccos. I was afraid that when ownership and production moved from the UK to Germany the tobacco would suffer and I moved on to other tobaccos. I finally had to break down and try a tin. Is it the same as the UK Rattray's? Can't tell because it has been so long since I've smoked Black Mallory. But is it still good? It's great! It is everything I remember about Black Mallory. So good, it is an all day smoke for me. My next purchase from TobaccoPipes will be Black Mallory in bulk. You can't go wrong with this pipe tobacco.

    Smooth and tasty

A great Latakia blend in the Scottish tradition. Worth a try in the 50g tin, but it wasn't long until I was back for a half kilo bag that I transferred to jars in short order so I can enjoy this for years to come!

Much more subtle than I remember. Reasonable flavor but rather mild.
